This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” John 1:5-7
A Warning to All True Followers In order to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, we first have to be true believers and followers of Jesus Christ. The mere calling of ourselves Christians and regular church attendance do not make us into true believers and followers of Jesus Christ. We must be born again by water and the Holy Spirit to ensure that we can become the salt of the Earth and the light of the world. True believers and followers of Jesus Christ are those “who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." Those who walk after the flesh desire the things of the flesh; those who walk after the Spirit, desire the things of the Spirit; i.e., the things of God. The affection of the flesh is at enmity against God. Therefore, true believers and followers of Jesus Christ cannot walk after the flesh as those in darkness do. The principle of the true believer's relationship with God is the Holy Spirit which must dwell in them. It is of great importance that we receive and have life of the Holy Spirit because it is the Holy Spirit who constitutes our link with God through Jesus Christ. When the Holy Spirit of God comes into us, it does not cease to be of God, and does not make us cease to be human beings; but the Holy Spirit produces divinely in us a moral condition of being and we become new in virtue of the cleansing by Christ's blood. With Christ having accomplished the work of deliverance through his crucifixion and resurrection, and bestowing this power in us – i.e. the Holy Spirit dwelling in us - we are now in Christ and Christ is in us. |
In having this new life born of the Holy Spirit, which has its own moral character, we are, as such, before God and in God’s sight, what we are in this new nature and are inseparable from its source, as the stream from the fountain. The true believer is in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit being in consequence of Christ's work active in, and the power of, the life that he has given. This is the true believers’ standing before God. We are no longer in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in us. There is no other means. And it is indeed the Spirit of Christ - he in the power of whom Christ acted, lived, offered himself; by whom also he was raised from the dead. Jesus Christ’s whole earthly life was the expression of the operation of the Spirit - of the Holy Spirit that now lives in the true believers and followers, as it is written: "Now, if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." The Holy Spirit is the true and only link, the eternal reality, of the new life in which we live in God. The question is: How do we get the Holy Spirit to come and dwell within us? The answer is, as it is written in Luke 11:9-13:
"So
I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock,
and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks
finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any
father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he
give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer
him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask Him!" |
